Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention Protocol

The purpose of this protocol is to provide administrators and staff with information on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention to increase awareness and ensure a timely and appropriate school-based response. Suicide is a complex and multifaceted issue. It is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10 to 24 in Canada. Research has shown that for one person who has died by suicide, 50 people are affected. For youth, there is an increased risk of friends copying this behaviour or suffering post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. Reducing suicide rates requires a combination of prevention, intervention and postvention strategies.

This protocol provides practical advice and resources to help school staff manage a suicide, attempts at suicide or thoughts of suicidal activity.
