Board Meeting Highlights for February 2021

GUELPH, Ontario – The February meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on February 23, 2021. The following provides highlights from the meeting.
Teaching Reading in the UGDSB
Staff gave a comprehensive presentation covering numerous areas of work related to teaching reading to students in the UGDSB, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The presentation covered topics including the Ontario language curriculum, literacy development, instructional strategies through the grades, information specific to teaching reading in kindergarten, the primary division, junior division, intermediate division, and secondary school, as well as special education supports.

Federal Funding Update
Staff provided information regarding the second phase of investments provided under the federal Safe Return to Class Fund.
In February, the Ministry of Education provided information to school boards on the Federal Safe Return to Class Fund, detailing an additional $381 million provided by the federal government. The information provided by the Ministry was summarized into three categories: programs where board-by-board allocations have been provided, programs with additional details to follow and additional announcements related to this funding.

Policy Update
Trustees approved the following board policy: Policy 503 Safe Schools. Trustees received the following board protocol: P15 Overdose Protocol.
