CCVI students participate in local environmental art show

April 26, 2023

GUELPH, ON — Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute (CCVI) students captured the natural beauty of the Yorklands for an exhibition at Artworks Gallery Guelph (AGG).

From April 22 to May 5, the AGG is hosting “Artspiration: Inspired by Yorklands Green Hub” – the exhibition is a celebration of the artwork both past and present inspired by the Yorklands space.

The group of grade 12 students from CCVI were able to have their work featured at the exhibition through their visual arts teacher, Karin Silverstone, who had previously donated their own artwork to the Yorkland’s Green Hub committee. Silverstone then introduced the project to her students in the first semester during their stylized landscape unit.

“The entire class was encouraged to participate, 14 out of 21 [students] took the time to frame their artwork and ready it for hanging during semester one. Working on this unit, with a commitment to a cause in the community helped many students see value in the exercise,” said Silverstone.

At the exhibit, Silverstone and her students got the opportunity to hear from  MPP Mike Schreiner, MP Lloyd Longfield and the Head committee members of the Yorkland’s Green Hub speak about the future vision for the site.

The students’ artwork will remain in the exhibit until the end of its run on May 5.
