CHSS hosts immersive Grade 8 day for prospective students

November 29, 2023

GUELPH, ON — For the first time in two years, College Heights Secondary School (CHSS) opened their doors to prospective students.

Every morning from November 22 to November 24, grade 8 students from surrounding schools would get off the bus and flood the halls of CHSS for their Grade 8 Day visits, where they would begin to learn about the next step of their academic journeys and their career pathways choices beyond high school.

One group of students would come in the morning and another in the afternoon, where they would take a tour of the school and attend four different sessions at the variety of tech shops that CHSS provides.

“The goal is we try to make sure that every kid has the opportunity to see what kind of programming we have here, that’s a pathway into a very viable field,” said CHSS principal, Paul Richard.

Richard described CHSS as “a school of choice,” and students have a variety of choices from the tech courses that they could participate in like manufacturing, health care and green industries among others.

“Sometimes students don’t know what they want to do when they graduate so this just shows them all the opportunities that they have,” said CHSS special education resource teacher, Marian Box.

Over the three days, grade 8 students got to try out different options, so when they pick their courses in January, they are more informed.

CHSS’s grade 8 parents and students’ info night will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
