CWDHS student wins Aspirations in Computing award

October 25, 2019

FERGUS, Ontario – A student from Centre Wellington District High School is being honoured for her skills and achievements in computing.

CWDHS student Rachel is the recipient of a NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

The award honours students in grades 9 to 12 who identify as women, genderqueer or non-binary for their computing-related achievements. Award recipients are selected based on “their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.”  Nearly 14,000 students have received an Award for AiC since 2007.

Rachel is a member of CWDHS’s senior cybersecurity team, the KingsGuard, who are currently competing in CyberTitan, an international cybersecurity competition. Last year, Rachel was a member of the Terabytches, the school’s first all-female team, which competed in the CyberTitan National Finals after finishing as the top female team in the country

The AiC award ceremony will take place on November 9 in Mississauga. The ceremony is being held in conjunction with the Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing conference — a large gathering of female students from across Canada who are studying Computer Science in post-secondary.

Rachel is currently taking advanced computer engineering and is thinking about her post-secondary opportunities and choices.

Congratulations Rachel!
