High tech: Career Pathways event brings technology to grade 8 students

October 13, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Hundreds of Upper Grand District School Board grade 8 students got a hands-on experience of possible career options on Thursday.

They, along with students from the Wellington Catholic DSB, attended Career Pathways Guelph, an educational event hosted by the Career Education Council of Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin.

In addition to hearing from motivational speaker Sunjay Nath and meeting with prospective employers like the OPP and University of Guelph, students had the chance to become immersed in possible career options in an interactive exhibit room, new to the event this year.

The interactive room featured stations from a number of secondary schools, including Centre Wellington DHS, Guelph CVI, Centennial CVI and College Heights SS.

The secondary students were on hand to showcase their skills in areas such as robotics and virtual reality – all skills that the grade 8 students can acquire in Upper Grand secondary schools.

Four of the board’s many experiential programs were represented: Dual Credit, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, Specialist High Skills Major and Co-op. These programs promote learning through experience and observation – and can open up a world of possible career paths that these grade 8 students may not have been aware of.

In addition to virtual reality games and robotics, students were able to fly drones and get a close-up look at GCVI’s student-built electric car.
