November 5-11 is Treaties Recognition Week

November 5, 2023

Guelph, ON — Treaties Recognition Week is November 5-11, 2023. This year the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is encouraging educators, parents, guardians and students to learn about their local treaty partner, what it means to be a good treaty person and to deepen their learning by considering how they might commit to everyday actions that fulfill their roles and responsibilities as a treaty person throughout their lives.

This year there are many resources the Indigenous Education team has provided for educators, parents, guardians and students to deepen their understanding of treaties in Canada.

Educators are encouraged to sign up for the live stream events hosted by Isaac Murdoch, Shannon Paul and  Kanahus Manuel. There will be multiple presentations, each will be geared toward certain grades and curriculum connections.

There are numerous resources on the Educator Hub for educators to explore with their students and consider: What reconciliation projects can you be part of on an individual, classroom or school level? How can you engage in actions that benefit your treaty partners? How can connections be made with our responsibilities to the land and to each other?

We encourage parents and guardians to participate in live stream events that are being offered to the public by Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin focused on “Renewing Our Treaty Relationship.” Additional information and registration can be found here.

We also encourage parents and guardians to discuss with their child what they are learning about treaties and why treaties are important to all Canadians. This video is helpful in starting a conversation as to why treaties are important to everyone.
