UG students participate in regional cross country meet

October 20, 2023

FERGUS, ON — Congratulations to all the UG students that participated at the regional cross country meet at Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS).

Eight UGDSB schools participated in the meet: Alma PS, Salem PS, Elora PS, Victoria Terrace PS, John Black PS, Ponsonby PS, J.D. Hogarth PS and James McQueen PS.

Students as young as 6 participated in a variety of races; grades 1 and 2 ran 1 km, grades 3 and 4 ran 1.5 km, and grades 5 and 6 ran 2 km.

Teacher Tracey Mooney at John Black PS said that the day’s events would not have been possible without the help and organization of Murray Skerritt and Brett Turner at CWDHS and their grade 10 students.

“The students help as rabbits and turtles for every race as well as work the start line, the finish line and many other jobs,” said Mooney.

Mooney also highlighted that the cross country meet was especially important for students at James McQueen PS because it is the only sporting event that includes primary students. “Since James McQueen only goes to grade three, this is a highlight for their students.”

For weeks leading up to the events, students practiced by working on their stamina and endurance and the meet is an opportunity for all students at different levels to participate and get active.
