UG students reveal urban garden for Young Farmers Summer School Program

August 1, 2023

Guelph, ON — Last week, students of the Upper Grand District School Board revealed their urban community garden as part of their cumulative project for the Young Farmers Summer School Program.

The unique style of experiential learning taught the students a lot about gardening, food stability and food scarcity, sustainability and community services. The event was filled with community members and Upper Grand staff learning about what the program had taught students.

Community members had the opportunity to pick from what was grown and take seeds to start their own home garden.

“It was just a fun course and I had a lot of fun learning, our work brought attention to community gardens,” said one of the students from the program.

The Young Farmers Summer School Program intends to develop another community garden in the Guelph/Eramosa area and they plan to work with local businesses to sell their harvest and flowers in Guelph grocery stores and markets.
