UGDSB students win gold at Skills Canada Nationals

May 30, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – Two students from the Upper Grand District School Board have won gold at the Skills Canada National Competition.

Jade and Kyle, both students at Centre Wellington DHS in Fergus, travelled to Halifax this week for the Nationals, after winning gold at the provincial Skills Ontario competition.

On May 28 and 29, high school students from across the county competed in the multi-trade and technology competition.

Kyle won gold in Job Skill Demonstration, where he taught the skill of TV Video, and Jade won gold in Workplace Safety. They were both coached by CWDHS teacher Jenny Ritter.

Back in September, Jenny asked Kyle and Jade if they would be interested in competing at Skills. She knew both of them had the potential to do well and they readily agreed. They spent a lot of time practicing – during lunch hours, after school, on weekends – and this continued in Halifax right up until the competition itself. Jenny said that both students worked extremely hard and seeing them both make the podium in the Employability sector was such a thrill.

Kyle and Jade are moving on to post-secondary next year where they will both enter programs that connect to what they did at Skills.

Congratulations Jade and Kyle!
