UGDSB staff and students to continue their learning during Treaties Recognition Week

November 7, 2022

In 2016, Ontario designated the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week. This year, Treaties Recognition Week is November 6-12, 2022.

This annual event honours the importance of treaties and helps students learn more about treaty rights and relationships. By learning more about our collective treaty rights and obligations, we can create greater understanding and nurture these relationships. During this week and throughout the year, UGDSB staff and students will continue their Indigenous Education learning.

This week is an opportunity for meaningful learning and awareness in Upper Grand schools. The UGDSB’s Indigenous Education Team has provided schools with a number of resources to support learning during the week, including treaty facts, considerations for schools to make when planning for Treaties Recognition Week, information on the Treaty Partners for UGDSB schools, resources for moving to action and more.

An important aspect of the week and Indigenous Education is centering Indigenous voices. Colonialism has actively erased and excluded the voice and truth of Indigenous peoples, so it is essential that Indigenous peoples are guiding this work.
