UGDSB students explore career pathways

GUELPH, ON – On October 18, 2023, hundreds of grade 8 students from several Upper Grand District School Board schools attended a Career Pathways event at the Italian Canadian Club in Guelph.

This engaging and interactive career fair offered grade 8 students the opportunity to learn more about careers and different pathways that may interest them before they start high school.

According to the Career Education Council (CEC), “Interactions at this event will help local youth and their teachers and parents [guardians] as they make important decisions around future education and career pathways. Career exhibitors offer students insights and inspiration that can help them as they make important decisions about future education and career pathways.”

The event was hosted by the UGDSB and CEC and was sponsored by Linamar and Invest in Guelph.

Various UGDSB programs were in attendance to help grade 8 students get a first-hand look at some of the offerings available at the high school level. In attendance were the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), Dual Credit, Co-op, John F. Ross CVI First Responders Course, GCVI Electric Car program and the CCVI Robotics team.

Employers and community partners at the event included, Conestoga College, International Student Exchange Ontario, Career Education Council, Guelph and District Home Builders, Linamar Corporation, Thomas Field Homes, Polycon Industries, Wright Haven, Guelph Wish Fund, Hope House, Immigrant Services, City of Guelph, Robin’s Nest Family Care, Let’s Talk Science, and the Canadian Heavy Equipment College.
