Since its opening in 1952, our school is proud to be named for Colonel John McCrae, physician, soldier and renowned poet. It is his sensitive reflection on war and peace, the poem In Flanders Fields which has brought him national and international fame. Its first verse is printed on the Canadian ten-dollar bill in both English and French.
Colonel John McCrae was born and lived in our community. His historical homesite is one block away and each year hosts our student-led Remembrance Day Service. Ecole John McCrae School is beautifully situated on the Speed River adjacent to city park areas with a large play area of grass, maple trees, wild flower gardens, playing fields and modern playground equipment. This environment allows access to quality physical education programs and enhanced nature studies.
In September, 2003, École John McCrae School became a French Immersion Centre. The school encourages active parent involvement through volunteer opportunities such as the Art Image program. Parents offer help in our extracurricular programs, daily lunch duty, trip supervision, as library and classroom helpers, through fundraising events and school sports programs.
Red, blue and white are the school colours. Our school mascot is the Mustang.
Le monde à notre portée. The world awaits us.
