Inside the TJRC - Copyright

Copyright and fair dealing considerations impact much of the work that happens in a school board - from developing lesson materials, to using films and videos, to creating training resources.

Under the Canadian Copyright Act, copyright applies to "original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works that are in a fixed material form (i.e., written, recorded)."

The fair dealing provision in Canada’s copyright law permits us to copy and communicate short excerpts from copyright-protected works when it is for educational purposes and when the use is "fair".

TJRC has dedicated a section of our new website to information and resources that will equip and empower staff to navigate copyrighted materials with confidence, including the Fair Dealing Decision Tool and the latest edition of Copyright Matters!

TJRC staff can also provide UGDSB employees with guidance regarding copyright questions and public performance rights. Contact Lauren Bull, Supervisor of Library and Media Services, to learn more.
