The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is continuing to highlight the seven focus areas of our Sustainability & Climate Action Plan (2025–2030). This month, we are focusing on Waste.
Reducing waste is about more than recycling. It’s about thinking carefully about what we use, how much we use, and what happens to items when we are finished with them.
Why waste reduction matters
When less waste goes to landfill:
Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced
Natural resources are protected
Lower disposal costs
Students learn lifelong habits that support a healthy planet
Small daily choices can make a big difference.
What UGDSB is doing
Across the district, UGDSB is working to:
Reduce the amount of waste created in schools and worksites
Improve recycling and organics programs so more materials are reused or composted
Create clearer signage and consistent systems so students and staff know how to sort waste properly
Support student learning and leadership through classroom connections and environmental initiatives
Track progress using data to help guide future improvements
This work helps build environmentally responsible schools and offices while supporting student learning.
How families can help
Waste reduction works best when school and home efforts support each other. Families can take part by:
Packing litterless lunches using reusable containers
Choosing reusable water bottles and cutlery
Talking about what items can be recycled or composted
Reducing food waste at home
Printing only when necessary
Encouraging students to think about waste at home reinforces what they are learning at school.
Student voice and action
Students across UGDSB can explore waste reduction through classroom learning, environmental clubs, and school initiatives. When students lead by example, they inspire change in their schools and communities. Together, students, families, and staff can reduce waste and help build a more sustainable future for everyone.
