Can you tell which one contains cannabis? neither can a child. Store edibles safely. There are 2 gummy bears pictured, they are red.

This April, Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) has some cannabis related information for parents and caregivers:

Cannabis safety starts at home

Accidental cannabis poisoning is a real risk and occurs most often in homes. Cannabis edibles can look just like treats to curious children, especially edibles like candies, chocolates, and cookies. Even a small amount of cannabis can make a child very sick. Warning signs include extreme sleepiness, confusion, vomiting, trouble breathing, poor balance, seizures, and loss of consciousness (passing out).

Simple steps can keep children safe:

  • Lock up cannabis in child-resistant packages and keep it out of sight and reach (just like medications and cleaning products).

  • Don’t use cannabis or eat edibles in front of children.

  • Buy legal cannabis products with safer packaging.

  • Make sure all caregivers know these steps.

If you think your child has accidentally consumed cannabis, call the Ontario Poison Centre (1-800-268-9017) or get medical help right away. Call 911 if your child is having trouble breathing or loses consciousness.
