A student from Norwell District Secondary School has been invited to partake at the Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto this month in the Prepared Speech category.

Grade 11 student Elsie Spencer will present a speech focusing on creating equitable pathways in the Skilled Trades and Technologies for underrepresented groups, including women, racialized individuals, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

“It’s been inspiring to watch Elsie use her voice to advocate for change in such a powerful and thoughtful way,” Elsie's teacher Dillon Bernier said. “Her speech doesn’t just reflect hours of research and preparation—it reflects a deep commitment to equity, which is what the future of skilled trades needs.”

Elsie’s speech will highlight the importance of inclusive practices and equitable access in career and technical education, aligning with both her personal values and the evolving landscape of skilled trades in Ontario.

"As I grow up, equity becomes more important to me. I want to be a part of the change that creates a positive future for the next generation. Creating this speech was an opportunity for my voice to be heard and my ideas to be shared," Elsie said.

The Skills Ontario Competition is the largest skilled trades and technology event in Ontario, bringing together thousands of students from across the province to compete in over 70 contests ranging from carpentry and welding to fashion, coding, and public speaking.
