The MADE Urban Arts program hosted a special screening of the documentary Play it Loud! at The Bookshelf Cinema in Guelph on Thursday, May 15 with star and subject Jay Douglas in attendance.
Play it Loud! documents how Jamaican music became a large part of Canadian culture, as told through Douglas’ own story of immigrating to Canada from Jamaica in the early 1960s and his vibrant musical career that followed.
Douglas is a multi-Juno nominated musician and has been performing since the age of 17 solo and with his band, The Cougars. He’s played at Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, and the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, as well as many other clubs and festivals across Ontario.
MADE Urban Arts is an interdisciplinary arts program offered by the Upper Grand District School Board every second semester of each academic year. It’s an offsite program and students who attend can earn four credits in music, art, drama and English.
