Policy 323 Celebrations, Commemorations and Flags

Policy Statement

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) acknowledges and supports individuals, groups, events, and days of significance to UGDSB students, staff, and the broader community, and expresses this recognition through celebrations, commemorations, and the display of flags.

The UGDSB supports student and staff achievements and identities through various forms of celebrations in a consistent and efficient manner while promoting safety, inclusivity, and mutual respect.

The UGDSB is dedicated to supporting school communities during times of loss with sensitivity, equity, and respect. Commemorative activities honour the deceased, acknowledge the resulting grief, and support a school environment centered on learning and well-being.

The UGDSB is committed to the display of flags with dignity and respect. This includes flags that promote a safe and inclusive learning and working environment for all students, staff and community members.

This policy is aligned with and supports the board’s Multi-Year Plan and guiding principles of human rights, anti-oppression, student and staff well-being. At all times, this policy shall be consistent with all UGDSB policies and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
