The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is committed to caring for the environment today while building a more sustainable future for students. As part of this work, we are highlighting key focus areas from our Sustainability & Climate Action Plan (2025–2030).

This spotlight focuses on Energy — how we use energy in our schools and board buildings, and how we can use it more wisely.

Why energy matters

Using less energy helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers the cost of operating schools. When we save energy, we can put more resources back into classrooms and student learning. It’s a win for students, families, and the planet.

What UGDSB is doing

Across the district, the UGDSB is taking action to improve energy efficiency, including:

  • Reducing energy use by 12% per square metre by 2028, compared to 2023 levels

  • Expanding solar power, with more solar panels installed on school rooftops

  • Improving heating and cooling, including the use of heat pump technology to lower emissions and increase comfort

  • Upgrading to LED lighting across schools and board sites by 2028 to reduce electricity use

These steps help create healthier learning environments while reducing our environmental footprint.

How families can help

Sustainability works best when we all take part. Families can support energy conservation by:

  • Talking with children about turning off lights and devices when they’re not needed

  • Using natural light at home whenever possible

  • Encouraging energy-saving habits that students can also practice at school

Small actions, repeated every day, make a big difference. Together, we’re powering a greener future for UGDSB students and communities.
