The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is continuing to highlight the seven focus areas of our Sustainability & Climate Action Plan (2025–2030). This month, we’re focusing on Water.

Water is essential for healthy schools and healthy communities. Using water wisely helps protect local waterways, reduces the energy needed to treat and move water, and supports a more sustainable future for students.

When we conserve water, we help to:

  • Protect an important natural resource

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions (because water systems use energy)

  • Reduce operating costs in our schools and buildings

  • Teach students everyday habits that support the environment

  • Small actions, repeated daily, can make a big difference.

What UGDSB is doing

Across the district, UGDSB is taking steps to improve water conservation and water efficiency, including:

  • Reducing water use where possible across schools and worksites

  • Upgrading fixtures and equipment over time to more water-efficient options

  • Monitoring water use to better understand patterns and identify opportunities to improve

  • Supporting student learning through classroom connections, inquiry, and environmental initiatives

  • Building awareness so students and staff understand how choices impact water use

This work supports sustainability while also helping create healthy, well-run learning environments.

How families can help at home

Families can support water conservation by practicing simple habits at home, such as:

  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth

  • Taking shorter showers

  • Fixing leaky taps as soon as possible

  • Running dishwashers and laundry only when full

  • Using a reusable water bottle and refilling it often

Talking about why water matters helps children build habits they can use for life — at home, at school, and in the community.

Learning and leadership

Students across UGDSB may explore water conservation through classroom learning and school-based initiatives. When students understand how water is used and why it matters, they are better prepared to be thoughtful, informed citizens. Together, students, families, and staff can make choices that protect water and support a healthier future.
