GUELPH, Ontario – Students from the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) and Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) will come together this spring to celebrate athletic achievement, inclusion, and community at the annual Special Olympics Track and Field events.

The first event will take place in Guelph and will bring together students from both the WCDSB and UGDSB. More than 1,500 athletes, peer coaches, staff and volunteers are expected to take part in a full day of track and field and adaptive events.

This long-standing event is made possible through a strong partnership between the UGDSB and WCDSB. Students of all ages will participate in a range of activities, including running events, jumping events, and adapted activities designed to ensure all athletes can take part.

“For over 20 years, this event has celebrated the incredible spirit of our athletes,” April King, UGDSB Principal of Care and Treatment, Special Education Accessibility, & Project SEARCH. “It’s a day that highlights perseverance, teamwork, and joy.”

“We are so excited to celebrate our athletes,” said Nicole Wilson, WCDSB Special Education Resource Teacher. “We are grateful for the many staff, volunteers, families and community members who help make this day so special.”

The opening ceremonies will begin at 10am, featuring the Parade of Athletes and Opening Remarks.

A second Special Olympics Track and Field Day will be held in Orangeville for UGDSB students from Dufferin County and North Wellington. This event will welcome approximately 650 athletes and peer coaches from UGDSB schools.

New activities at the Orangeville event this year include 200m Unified run and 4x100m Unified relay to end the day. Unified teams consist of one Unified Partner and one Special Olympics Athlete.

Both events provide meaningful opportunities for students to build confidence, develop skills, and celebrate success in an inclusive and supportive environment. We are thankful for all of the donors and supporters who help make these days possible.
