Walking bear singers drumming

On April 29, 2026, Indigenous Youth Council students from across the Upper Grand District School Board, gathered at the Art Gallery of Guelph to hear and learn from three members of the Walking Bear Singers.

The Youth Council is made up of UGDSB students in grades 8-12 from all regions of the board. They meet several times a year, in person or virtually, to learn from each other, and guest speakers, and to share their feedback with UGDSB staff.

The Walking Bear Singers are a group of young singers from Ginoogaming First Nation. Since 2019, they have been singing to advocate for suicide prevention, awareness, and to honour those who have journeyed into the Spirit World.

Throughout the day, students learned about drumming, dance, and engaged in meaningful conversations and reflections about using their voice to make change and being proud of who they are and where they come from .
