Students paint on aisles in a school gym.

Last week's Celebration of the Visual Arts at Centre Wellington District High School was a great success!

There were 114 pieces of art from seven UGDSB secondary schools included in the second annual UGDSB Excellence in Visual Arts show, including both 2D and 3D submissions. Of those, 26 pieces were chosen to move on to the 'Emerging Insights Show' at the Wellington County Museum by a team of two jurors; local professional artists Phil Irish and Eric Montgomery.

The opening Gala for the 'Emerging Insights Show' is on May 28th, 7-9pm at the Wellington County Museum. There are numerous awards that will be presented for the participating artists from the Elora/Fergus Arts Council, the Wellington County Museum, and private donors.

The 'Battle of the Brushes' was also held on May 7th and had 24 students from seven different high schools participating in the board-wide battle against each other and the clock. Based on the public's popular vote, Ava N. of CWDHS emerged victorious in the final round. All of the speed paintings were sold through silent auction with the proceeds split between the artist and a charity of her choosing. Ava received $300 and $300 will go to Cats Anonymous in Arthur.
