The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is wrapping up its series highlighting the seven focus areas of our Sustainability & Climate Action Plan (2025–2030). This time, we’re focusing on Environmental Leadership.
Environmental leadership is about working together to create positive change. It means making thoughtful choices, taking action to care for the environment, and encouraging others to do the same. Students, families, staff, and community members all have a role to play.
Why environmental leadership matters
The actions we take today help shape the future. Environmental leadership helps us:
Protect natural resources for future generations
Build healthy, sustainable communities
Develop problem-solving and leadership skills
Connect learning with real-world challenges
Inspire positive change both at school and at home
Leadership doesn't require a title. It can begin with simple actions and everyday choices.
What UGDSB is doing
Through the Sustainability & Climate Action Plan, UGDSB is working to:
Support student leadership opportunities that encourage environmental action and learning
Embed sustainability into everyday decision-making across schools and board operations
Provide learning opportunities that help students understand environmental challenges and solutions
Celebrate sustainability successes from schools across the district
Track progress and continue improving environmental practices over time
These efforts help create a culture where sustainability is part of how we learn, work, and grow together.
How families can support environmental leadership
Families play an important role in helping children develop lifelong habits that support sustainability. You can encourage environmental leadership at home by:
Talking about environmental issues and possible solutions
Involving children in recycling, composting, and waste reduction efforts
Conserving energy and water together
Walking, biking, or carpooling when possible
Supporting participation in environmental clubs, projects, or community events
When children see environmental leadership in action, they are more likely to develop confidence in their ability to make a difference.
Celebrating a year of sustainability
Over the past year, students and staff across UGDSB have demonstrated environmental leadership in many ways. They have participated in sustainability challenges, reduced waste, conserved energy and water, supported active transportation, and explored environmental issues through classroom learning. These efforts show that meaningful change happens when people work together toward a common goal.
As we conclude this year's Sustainability Spotlight series, we thank our students, families, staff, and community partners for their commitment to building a more sustainable future.
Together, we are helping create schools and communities where environmental responsibility, innovation, and leadership can thrive.
