Kendra Corbett being interviewed

Earlier this month, grade 3 students at Princess Margaret Public School took the national spotlight to showcase hands-on math learning in action. Kendra Corbett’s classroom at the school was featured in a CBC National News segment examining student math scores across Canada and how effective teaching strategies translate into daily classroom success.

In Corbett’s classroom, and across the Upper Grand District School Board, math lessons at the grade 3 level build foundational numeracy by pairing direct instruction with interactive small-group stations using counting blocks and number games.

Having a national film crew in the classroom made for an unforgettable experience for students. Corbett shared how thrilled the students were to host CBC and see their classroom on national television, though one student humorously said they were disappointed to not get any screen time.

The excitement continued long after the cameras stopped rolling. "I just keep watching it and watching it at home!" exclaimed one student, while another proudly noted that the crew caught a great shot of them in action.
