Why Problem Solving Matters
Every day brings new choices, obstacles, and learning opportunities. This month, we are focusing on Problem Solving—helping children and youth learn how to collect information, make sense of challenges, and explore creative solutions.
When students learn to navigate everyday hurdles intentionally, they build emotional resilience, cognitive flexibility, and confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.
The 5-Step Problem Solving Framework
Help your child(ren) visualize and practice this simple step-by-step approach:
Identify the Issue: Name the exact problem clearly.
Brainstorm Freely: Generate as many ideas as possible without immediate judgment.
Weigh Options: Discuss the pros, cons, and potential outcomes of each choice.
Test a Solution: Choose one promising strategy and put it into action.
Reflect & Adjust: Check in on how it went. If it didn't work, treat it as a valuable learning moment and try another approach!
7 Ways to Practice Problem Solving at Home
Model Thinking Out Loud: Share your own thought process when facing everyday tasks so your child(ren) hears how you identify a problem and walk through solutions step-by-step.
Break Big Problems into Bite-Sized Steps: Large challenges can feel overwhelming. Help your child untangle complex issues into smaller, manageable actions.
Make Brainstorming Fun & Judgment-Free: Write down every idea—wild or practical—without shooting anything down. Sort through the ideas together afterward.
Talk Through Pros and Cons - Discuss cause and effect: "What might happen if we choose Option A versus Option B?"
Reset Before Resolving: Ensure your child(ren) is calm before diving into Problem Solving. Emotional regulation sets the stage for clear, focused thinking.
Encourage "Thinking" Words: Guide your child(ren) to use objective, logical descriptions alongside naming how they feel.
Follow Up & Reflect: After testing a solution, ask: "Is this plan working for you, or should we adjust and try something else?"
Championing Health and Well-being:
Developing strong Problem Solving habits directly benefits physical and mental health. Studies show that effective problem solving reduces daily stress, leading to:
Richer, more restful sleep
Improved focus and concentration
Lower physical muscle tension and stress-related fatigue
