Guelph, ON -- From December 2 to 5, 2024, students across the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) had the unique opportunity to experience the artistry of Cris Derksen, a Juno-nominated Indigenous cellist and composer.
Combining Classical, Indigenous, and Electronic music, Derksen brought a fresh and vibrant energy to each performance. Joined by a talented group of musicians and a Cree hoop dancer.
The Book Club created a dynamic experience that celebrated culture, creativity, and self-expression. One standout moment was the performance of North, a piece inspired by Derksen’s Northern Alberta roots, blending cello melodies with electronic layers to evoke the feeling of life in the North.
Students were drawn into the rhythm of the music and the stories behind it. The visual artistry of the hoop dancer captivated students, complementing the music’s emotional depth.
The UGDSB is grateful to Derksen and all the members of The Book Club for eight fantastic performances.
