The Wellington Heights Secondary School Special Olympics Bocce Team took home the gold medal at the Special Olympics Ontario School Championships earlier this month.
The competition took place at Carleton University in Ottawa from June 2-5, 2025. The team, consisting of four students, a peer helper, and two teacher-coaches, played a total of eight games against schools from across Ontario and ended with a 7-1 record.
"Despite the 30 degree weather and nail-biter situations that came down to crucial final end shots, our students played admirably, displaying heart and determination," Wellington Heights SS teacher and coach, Christine Chambers, said in an email to staff.
