Policy 505 Student Concussion Prevention, Identification and Management

Policy Statement

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) recognizes that students’ health, safety, and well-being are essential for effective learning. To support students in leading safe, healthy, and active lives, the board prioritizes student safety and injury prevention in all school and board activities.

Concussions can have a serious effect on a young, developing brain, and proper recognition and response to concussion can prevent further injury and help with recovery. Children and adolescents are at risk for concussions during physical activity, including physical education classes, playground time and sports activities. To address this risk, the board is committed to promoting awareness of the signs and symptoms of a concussion and to the management of diagnosed concussions, consistent with Rowan’s Law, the Education Act, and Policy/Program Memorandum 158.
