Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the environmental footprint of schools. The 6 key areas of focus and achievement are: Teamwork & Leadership, Energy Conservation, Waste Minimization, School Ground Greening, Curriculum, and Environmental Stewardship.
Certification recognizes a school for its annual achievement in the six key areas. Schools set goals to increase the types of environmental activities in each category and can certify with bronze, silver, gold or even platinum EcoSchools status depending on how successfully the school has met the requirements of the program based on a points system.
The following is excerpted from a media release:
UGDSB schools are 100% certified as Ontario EcoSchools
This year, schools across the Upper Grand are certifiably green! A record 100% of schools in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) certified with the Ontario EcoSchools program, joining a growing movement of 1,900 schools across the province.
Ontario EcoSchools works with 58 school boards to nurture student leadership and foster environmental learning and action in schools. Certification is based on a provincial standard of excellence and reaches 1,000,000 students across Ontario.
UGDSB is proud to be part of this growing network and supports ongoing environmental practices in schools. This year, all of the board’s 76 schools certified – allowing UGDSB to reach its goal of 100% a year earlier than planned.
Ontario EcoSchools and UGDSB are proud of the journeys of all certifying schools and their efforts to integrate environmental education and action into the daily lives of students.
We are so proud of all our EcoSchools this year!
